Why does a water softener need salt? The purpose is not to filter water directly with salt, but to restore the resin's working capacity.
A typical softening system has three key components: the control valve switches water paths, the resin tank performs ion exchange, and the brine tank prepares salt water for regeneration. Add salt to the brine tank and use it according to the equipment instructions.
During normal operation, hard water passes through sodium-cycle resin. The resin exchanges and retains calcium and magnesium from the water while releasing sodium ions. Water hardness falls, reducing scaling risk.
The resin's exchange capacity is limited. As more water is treated, calcium and magnesium occupy more exchange sites. Once the set conditions are reached, the system needs to start regeneration.
During regeneration, concentrated brine enters the resin tank. The large quantity of sodium ions helps exchange calcium and magnesium off the resin. They leave with the regeneration wastewater, and the resin regains its softening capacity.
A typical regeneration process includes backwashing, brine draw and slow rinsing, fast rinsing, and refilling the brine tank. Water supply resumes after rinsing is complete. Sequences and parameters may differ among control valves, so follow the equipment settings.
Softening primarily addresses hardness. It is not sterilization or reverse osmosis desalination. Sodium content may increase after softening. Before choosing a process, consider water-quality tests and the actual water-use targets.
Remember: resin performs softening, and salt supports regeneration. Test water quality first, then match the process. Yunnan Gudian Technology Research Institute understands Yunnan's water and understands high-altitude water treatment even better.
